Moscow taxi drives into crowd? A Moscow taxi driver lost control of his car and drove his vehicle onto a crowded sidewalk on Saturday afternoon. At least seven people were injured, including two Mexican nationals, who had come to Russia for the World Cup.

The accident occurred on Ilyinka Street near Red Square, when many tourists and locals were out celebrating the Russia 2018 Mundial. Video footage shows a yellow cab abruptly accelerating out of the line of slowly moving cars and swerving onto the sidewalk. The vehicle is seen running into several pedestrians and crashing into a road sign.

“According to preliminary data, the crash occurred when the driver lost control of the car,” Moscow police said, in a statement. A criminal investigation into the incident has been launched.

Footage shot by bystanders shows the driver fleeing the site of the accident with a crowd following him. It remains unclear whether people managed to catch up with him or if police got to him first.

Police said the man, currently in custody, had a Kyrgyz driving license and said he had not driven into the crowd on purpose.

Seven people were injured, according to police. One woman reportedly received medium injuries, while all other pedestrians were slightly injured.

Two women, both citizens of Mexico, were caught up in the incident, receiving slight injuries, their Embassy said.
