Here at Decider, we always aim to bring you the biggest, breakingest news possible. And there’s nothing bigger than the argument that rocked the Stargirl panel at New York Comic Con’s virtual Metaverse convention today: is the hulking monster Grundy a puppy, or an attack dog?
“It just seems like he has a good heart,” said Stargirl star Brec Bassinger on the pre-recorded panel.
If you missed Season 1 of the now CW-exclusive superhero series, Grundy was first revealed way back in the pilot, working for the villainous Injustice Society of America. He led to the seeming death of Starman (Joel McHale), and the actual death of Hourman’s (Cameron Gellman) parents. But by season’s end, Hourman held off from killing Grundy, after seeing the fear in his eyes.
“I don’t know if I call [him a] puppy,” showrunner Geoff Johns shot back. “He’s good, but he’s [got]–”
“Puppy dog eyes,” answered Bassinger.
As things continued to heat up on the panel, Johns added, “He’s kind of a dog that is has been trained to attack.”
That, as they say, was the breaking point for Bassinger.
“Geoff!” she answered. “All dogs are puppies. It can be the biggest most gruesome dog, and it is still a puppy.”
For Johns’ part, he wasn’t budging an inch.
“That’s exactly what I’m saying,” Johns said, “but what I’m saying is when you first look at him, he looks like an attack dog, and that’s really what he is. And is there a puppy inside him?”
Johns ended with a shrug, but after this heated exchange, will there even be a Season 2 of Stargirl????
Elsewhere, Johns talked about the introduction of villain Eclipso in the Season 1 finale, teasing that, “Eclipso [is] one of my very favorite villains from the comic books… He’s had a history with Wildcat and Doctor Mid-Nite and and the JSA too, but it’s going to be… We’ll see.”
Eclipso, for those not familiar with the character, is very much not a puppy. He’s a nearly all-powerful being who lives inside a crystal called the Black Diamond, and possesses the body of anyone who lets him out. On Stargirl, the person who may or may not let him out is Shiv (Meg DeLacy), Stargirl’s arch-enemy and fellow Blue Valley High student who escaped the carnage at the end of the season to wreak havoc on Season 2.
Before that, though, the panel discussed one of her biggest moments: killing her own father, the Dragon King (Nelson Lee).
“I remember at the table read when that was even said that I had killed my dad, I was like… what?” DeLacy said. “And everyone flipped out… Killing my dad was kind of sad ’cause I Love Nelson, but also very liberating.”
“When I finally saw [that] I was just literally shocked,” added Angelika Washington, who plays Dr. Mid-Nite on the series. “And also the way he died. It was just like, ‘wow she is the most evil villain ever.’”
Noted Bassinger to DeLacy, “It’s just like your lines are the most iconic from the whole season.”
Though, all joking aside, there wasn’t any big Season 2 news out of the panel — it hasn’t begun filming yet, though Johns and company are working on the story — you can expect DC’s Stargirl Season 2 to premiere exclusively on The CW and its associated streaming platforms. Maybe then we’ll finally find out if Grundy is a puppy or not.
